Listening Between the Lines

Listening Between the Lines, Inc. (or LBL) is a non-profit educational partnership incorporated in 2001. Their mission is: to provide tools for improving understanding and communication across race, ethnicity, nationality, culture, and class, by producing media projects that promote active involvement and result in positive lasting societal change.

This project was established to redesign the existing website, and to rebrand listeningbetweenthelines.org. A new logotype was developed and the LBL and Race with History websites were merged. The newly designed site is a multi-media, content-rich educational and commercial website featuring audio/video download sampling and purchase.

Alan Lipke & Listening Between the Lines

The development of the logo for this project was more circuitous than most. The original was an ear. The challenge was to modernize it and transform it from a stylized drawing into a true logotype. When discussing the project, the client always referred to it by the initials LBL. That gave me the idea to use only the initials as the new logo. Aspects such as future merchandising had to be considered during the design process. My eventual decision was to ditch the ear entirely and instead go with a wordmark. Or, initials actually. The placement of the letters with the “B” lowered and tipped is intended as a metaphor for racial strife.
